A Stronger NATO – Welcome to Montenegro! Russia Beware

A stronger NATO is what we need.   Especially the native Europeans, what with President Trump’s threats and innuendos suggesting reduced U.S. support. More tanks, bombers, fighters, armies – anything to push back against the hegemonic Putin.  And more vital military installations – naval bases, landing strips, army stations.  Yes, yes we must push back against Russian aggression.  They annexed Crimea; they invaded the Ukraine and Georgia.  My God, Montenegro must be next.  Now’s the time to rally to their aid, before it’s too late.  Plus, we’ll get their formidable military. This could be a real NATO coup.

Who’s to argue?  Montenegro is certainly the most beautiful country in Europe.  The glacier-formed Durmitor National Park is home to the spectacular Tara Canyon, the world’s second largest.  The stunning Tara River runs through the canyon for over 30 miles.

Nothing rivals the spectacular Bay of Kotor on the Adriatic Sea.  It runs 15 miles or so from the sea to the city of Kotor.  Nestled on a cape separating the bay from the gulf of Risan lies the small town of Perast.  Two stunning chapels rest on the two islets just past Perast.

And then there’s Montenegro’s full military complement.  They’ve got almost 2,000 active duty military.  But imagine if they had a draft!  Sure, most of their stuff came from the old Serbia-Montenegro combo before Montenegro’s emancipation in 2006, but the stuff’s only ten years old or so.

Stronger NATO

What’s more, there’s that navy.  Look, they’ve got 67 patrol boats.  And the Bar Naval Base – my God, the Bar Naval Base! Sure, we’ve had the American navy.  And the British and French navies.  But just think what NATO’s naval complement will look like now.  The heights that it can scale.  No more worries for our friends on the Adriatic.  The Russians will no longer be able to base their Italian night-time landing from their long-dreamed-for Montenegrin base.  Lay that one to rest!

No wonder the Kremlin objects to Montenegro’s NATO inclusion. They should fear a stronger NATO.  The West is so far-sighted.  Deterrence is the goal, and a NATO with Montenegro is certainly stronger than one without.  No way the Russians will dare further European incursions. Sure, an over-land Montenegrin attack would force them through the Ukraine, Romania and Serbia first.  Who could blame them, with the prize that lurks.  But not anymore!

At least not if the Montenegrins actually decide to join.  Their government has pushed hard to join the club for seven years now.  But their people are wise, and might not want to belong to any club that will accept them as a member.  Polls show only 39% or so really want to join the club.  Too much democracy might be a bad thing, so they’ll probably not be any Montenegro vote on this one.  We need a stronger NATO.

So Russia beware!  If President Trumpenstein approves, and the Spanish go along too, the full military might of 28 nations will be there to staunch your dream of a Montenegro coup.  Viva la Montenegro!

Glorious Time to Be Russian – Free Speech in the Moscow Springtime

What a glorious time to be Russian.  Governed by a constitution that provides “freedom of ideas and speech” for everyone.1  And other wonderful freedoms, including a “freedom of conscience” and a “freedom of religion.”  A Russian can’t “be forced to express his views and convictions or to reject them.”  Thank God “censorship shall be banned.” A Russian “shall have the right to association” and “the freedom of activity of public association shall be guaranteed.”  In fact “fundamental human rights and freedoms are inalienable and shall be enjoyed by everyone.”  Yes, it’s a glorious time in Russia!

Oh sure, there’s the little matter that “the propaganda or agitation instigating social, racial, national or religious hatred and strife shall not be allowed.”  Not to worry if a few of these terms aren’t defined.  Actually, none of them are.  But we Russians have a long history of trusting our leaders.  We’re quite sure our freedom of speech and right to public association won’t be impaired by these couple of undefined tawdry little words.  And yes, we know that our exercise of “the rights and freedoms of man and citizen shall not violate the rights and freedoms of other people.” But in government we trust. Russian Spy Charged in Yahoo Case Won’t Be Extradicted to U.S. – He’s Been Charged With Treason in Russia!

This Russian-U.S. hacking/spying scandal just keeps growing tentacles. There is a mounting story here.  And no one is paying attention. Today’s latest move in this ongoing battle involved the U.S. Justice Department indictment of two Russians in connection with the hacking scandal involving Yahoo’s email accounts.  One Russian spy charged in the Yahoo case is Dimitry Dokuchaev.

Dokuchaev is not just another Russian name.  He is no ordinary Russian spy who the Americans would now like to get their hands on.  You see, Dokuchaev was arrested in January by, guess who – the Russians themselves.  The charge: treason. Swamp Draining Under Obama? – Podesta’s Brother Lobbied For Russian Bank –

It looks like there was no Washington swamp draining during the Obama presidency.  We now know that during his administration John Podesta’s brother, Tony, lobbied on behalf of Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank.  John Podesta, of course, was the national chairman for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.  He had also previously been a special counselor to President Obama.  Tony Podesta’s goal: removal of sanctions imposed by President Obama on Sberbank.  Tony added David Adams to his Sberbank team.  Mr. Adams, fortuitously, served as Hillary’s assistant secretary of state for congressional affairs.

According to reports, the lobbying effort focused on the executive branch and the Congress.  Tony Podesta’s firm arranged at least two meetings between Sberbank and officials from the State Department. Looks like it was a good idea to have David Adams involved.  Easier to get into the State Department, we suppose.

Swamp Draining
Tony Podesta

So let’s try to understand this one. Democrats strongly infer collusion existed between the Trump campaign and the Russian government to somehow throw the election to Donald Trump.  At the same time, a powerful Democratic lobbying firm, with direct relationships into the White House, arranges meetings on behalf of a major Russian bank to eliminate sanctions.

Washington Swamps and Washington Hypocrisy

Does any of this stink?  Are we the only ones bothered by any of this?  If we ever needed evidence of the Washington Swamp, this is certainly it. When will the swamp draining begin?

Politics as usual in Washington.  And a little hypocrisy to boot.  We guess it’s OK for prominent Democrats to lobby on behalf of a Russian bank that is subject to sanctions.  But it’s not OK for the new President, or any of his associates, to converse with the Russian ambassador to the United States. Maybe this makes sense in some alternative universe.  Or maybe it just makes sense in Washington, D.C.

Trump, Russia and the Democrats – A New Dreyfus Affair

Trump, Russia and the Democrats.  A 2017 Dreyfus affair, but without any espionage.  A “scandal” looking for an act.  The cause?  Childish and churlish behavior from a President and Senators and Congressmen.  In one corner tweets the petulant president.  He agitates and provokes with no discernible or conceivable advantage to the interests of our country or its people.  A president who would do himself a world of good to study the life of George Washington.  There was a man revered and respected by friend and foe alike because he lived and breathed honor and virtue.  But not this President, version 45.

And in the other corner a sanctimonious group of opposers who fire at every decoy and launch aimless attack waves.  They’ve formed a phalanx to battle every twitch.  They shrill for resignations and special prosecutors but come to the public’s court with nary a scintilla of evidence or basis in fact.  They too care not for the deep wounds they inflict on the country, harms they will never appreciate so long as it all furthers their selfish interests.  Oh, they plead that they do it for us.  Balderdash!

Trump, Russia, they scream!  The country has been overrun.  And they, with their infinite wisdom and Yoda-like virtue, will save us from it all! Continue reading “Trump, Russia and the Democrats – A New Dreyfus Affair”

Republicans Beware! There’s a Russian Political Witch Hunt and You’re It.

McCarthyism is not dead.  Now it’s called the Putin-scare.  Republicans beware.  If any of you spoke with a representative of Putin’s government at any time during or since the presidential election cycle, you’d better tell us now. We will find out anyway.  And in either case, we know you and Putin are coordinating efforts to undermine our government.  You’re a Putin lackey even if you just thought about meeting with anyone who was ever associated with the Russian government.  Because we’ll find that out too. If you can just point to Russia on the map, well that’s enough; turn yourself in.  Anyone wearing red – we know what that means.  Reds fans, and we don’t mean from Cincinnati, will all wind up on the gallows.  We’ll be photographing anyone attending Red Sox opening day, too.

We’re gonna convene hearings.  Lots and lots of hearings.  And it’s going to go on for at least the next four years; maybe eight if that red party is still in the White House.  We’ll be on every corner and in every alley.  You know we are recording every conversation everywhere in the country. We’ve got a program for that too.

Republicans Beware!

Republicans beware!  We’re better at this than you think.  We’ve gotten rid of Flynn.  Boy was that easy!  We’ve got Sessions out of the way.  All we had to do there was check his appointments log.  That was easy too.  That Sessions, he’s not too bright.  Imagine, a brief conversation with the Russian ambassador after leaving a podium.  Yes, perhaps there were a few other ambassadors around, and Sessions may have spoken with them too.  But that doesn’t matter!  He spoke to that Russian in public, of all things.  God only know where this trail leads!

Republicans Beware
Russian Ambassador (spy!) Kislyak

Yes, we know that the Washington Post is telling us that this Russian ambassador “shows up everywhere and tries to talk to everyone.”  We know that’s what diplomats do.  But this guys a spy!  Why the heck would the Post tell us that this Ambassador Kislyak “is not considered especially close to Russian President Vladimir Putin”?  That’s really not helpful, you know.  The Post wouldn’t even stop there.  They brought up the old “current and former U.S. officials” telling us stuff, that “[f]or Kislyak to have sought contacts with . . . Flynn and . . . Sessions . . .should come as no surprise.”  Memo to the Post – please stop printing that kind of stuff!

And it would be better if ex-Obama people like Michael McFaul wouldn’t make comments like this: “[The Russian Ambassador] doesn’t get as much credit as he should, in my view, for being savvy about developing relationships with people all over [Washington].”  Geez, McFaul was Obama’s guy in Russia.  Somebody better tell him, no more interviews until we’re finished.

McFaul, pay attention.  We need more guys out there like Obama’s ex-CIA director John McLaughlin.  He got the memo.  Take a listen to his comment that “it does strain credibility” that Sessions could’ve forgotten meeting with Kislyak.  After all, Kislyak is “a hard guy to forget if you’ve met him.”  Now that’s more like it!

Republicans beware!  Better fess up now, you Russian sympathizers.  Turn in your Senate keys.  Turn in your Congressional keys.  And most certainly turn in your White House keys.  We’re gonna get all of you.  And don’t forget.  We are everywhere.  We’re trolling every website and every blog . . .
